Healthy Toddler Muffins

The banana oatmeal muffins make for a nutritious nursery/preschool snack or breakfast. Made with olive oil and flaxseed, they’re loaded with healthy fats, along with potassium from the bananas, protein from yogurt and eggs, and fiber from oats and whole grain flour. Chocolate chips make these baked goods extra yummy.

Nut-Free Oaty Banana Muffins for School

This is a nut-free recipe, so it’s safe for schools, too. I really enjoy these as an afternoon snack or fast breakfast option that’s made with whole grains and low in added sugar.

Why I Love These Banana Muffins

  • Healthy
  • Low in added sugar
  • Moist and tender, but with great texture
  • Freeze well
  • My toddler thinks these are yummy! (Always a win)
  • Uses simple ingredients you probably already have
  • Contains delicious chocolate chips

One-Bowl Muffin Ingredients

  • Ripe bananas: The best way to use up overripe bananas!
  • Plain Greek yogurt: Makes these moist and tender
  • Olive oil or neutral oil such as canola or avocado: Keeps them moist
  • Egg: Holds everything together, adds protein
  • Vanilla
  • Ground flaxseed: For an extra boost of healthy fats
  • Rolled oats (quick oats): Adds nice texture, fiber, and makes them filling
  • Whole grain flour: Whole wheat, spelt, whole wheat pastry flour, or gluten-free all-purpose flour
  • Sugar: A little goes a long way with this recipe using just ¼ cup (or use maple syrup)
  • Salt
  • Baking soda
  • Chocolate chips: Chocolate + banana = the best
  • Natural sprinkles: Optional, but fun. We used this brand

What Should Very Ripe Bananas Look Like?

The bananas you use for baking should be covered in brown spots to ensure maximum natural sweetness. This means you can add less sugar in the recipe.

Can I Replace the Chocolate Chips?

Yes, you can leave out the chocolate chips altogether or replace them with blueberries or chopped dried dates. I wouldn’t recommend chopped nuts if you are serving these to young toddlers and children, as they are a choking hazard and not school safe.

Serving Suggestions

A glass of milk is the perfect partner, but they’re also wonderful spread with peanut butter (at home, seed butter for school), cream cheese or Greek yogurt.

Make it a meal! If you need toddler lunch ideas, one of my favorite things to do is create a muffin lunch. I find the easiest, simplest toddler lunches are often the most successful. It’s also a fun idea if you and your toddler, kid, or baby are having an off day—a muffin lunch feels like a treat and breaks up your normal routine!

  • Muffin + Apple + Cheese or Cream Cheese
  • Muffin + Cucumber + Hummus or Yogurt
  • Muffin + Nut-Free Seed Butter + Banana
  • Muffin + Roasted Sweet Potato + Hard Boiled Egg
  • Muffin + Smoothie + Turkey Slices

For serving, I used to dice the muffin up for my toddler when he was just beginning to try this type of food, so you may want to cut it up into pieces for the youngest eaters.

How to Store them to Keep them Moist

Keep these in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days, in the fridge for 4 days (they will dry out in the fridge over a day or two, though, losing some of their moistness), or freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost in the microwave (start at 10 seconds) or at room temperature.

Description

The best, easy, one-bowl banana chocolate chip muffins are healthy and delicious. Chocolate chips and oats add flavor and texture, while yogurt, olive oil and ripe banana keep them moist. Perfect for kids, toddlers, and grownups alike. Low in sugar and ready in under 30 minutes.

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Line 12 to 18 (depending on if you’re making bigger or smaller muffins) muffin tin cups with baking cups, or grease with oil or butter.

2. In a large bowl, mash banana until mostly smooth. Whisk in yogurt, oil, egg, ground flaxseed, sugar, and vanilla until combined.

3. Stir in oats until fully incorporated, followed by flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Mix until everything is just combined, and then fold in chocolate chips.

4. Divide batter between prepared 12 or 18 muffin tin cups. Top with additional chocolate chips and sprinkles, if using.

5. Bake for 7 minutes in the center of the oven, rotate pans and bake for a further 7 to 12 minutes (less for smaller muffins (18 count), more for larger muffins (12-count)) until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the tops are beginning to brown.

6. Cool in pan for 5 minutes and then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Gluten-Free Oatmeal Banana Muffins: Replace the flour with a 1:1 gluten-free all-purpose baking flour. We like Bob’s Red Mill.
